Young Americans
September 19, 2008 to January 19, 2009
Through portraiture, artist Sheila Pree Bright explores Millennials’ thoughts and feelings about America-giving them a platform for their voices to be heard. This body of work, called Young Americans, engages the Millennial, better known as Generation Y, with conversations on America, while they pose with the American Flag.
Born in or after 1982, Millennial are considered the most influential generation since the Baby Boomers. Some market research suggests that they are very civic-minded and socially conscious as both individual consumers and employees. Unlike past youth generations, they are more affluent, better educated, technologically savvy, blunt and expressive, image driven, the most ethnically diverse, and more tolerant. They have been pressed for their vote, sought for their purchasing power, and watched closely by sociologists and historians for insight into how they will shape the future.
Participants from Generation Y are asked to think about how they see themselves with the American Flag and let Bright photograph them as they illustrate their perceptions of America. Afterwards, each subject writes a statement about America. The series, Young Americans, will also include a film that documents the studio experience of each sitter, along with his/her interaction with the American Flag and Sheila Pree Bright.
